Synopsis

COBE RESOURCE TAPE G99-005 01/26/99 00:05:06The Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) was a mission to measure the cosmic background radiation (generally considered a relic of the big bang). It was launched November 18, 1989 and carried three instruments, a Far Infrared Absolute Spectrophotometer (FIRAS) to compare the spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation with a precise blackbody, a Differential Microwave Radiometer (DMR) to map the cosmic radiation sensitively, and a Diffuse Infrared Background Experiment (DIRBE) to search for the cosmic infrared background radiation.

TAPE CONTENTS:

ITEM (1): COSMIC OBSERVATION BACKGROUND EXPLORER (COBE) - BIG BANG+15000 MILLION YEARS (PRE-LAUNCH VIDEO) - 8/24/89 - BDM finished production - COBE will study cosmic fossils in space from almost the beginning of time. These ancient fossils exist as cosmic background radiation and NASA has developed a unique satellite called COBE to probe cosmic background radiation as a key to unlock the early evolution of the universe. (includes satellite assembly and processing, interviews with scientists and spacecraft animation) (TRT: 12:56)
ITEM (2): COBE - "OUT IN SPACE, BACK IN TIME" (PRE-LAUNCH VIDEO)- Finished Production - COBE will look out into space back into time the spacecraft will undertake the esoteric task of proving new insights into the origin and evolution of the Universe.

(TRT: 2:35)
ITEM (3): COBE - "THE BEGINNING" (PRE-LAUNCH VIDEO) - Finished Production - How was the Universe created? In every culture and century since the dawn of time, inhabitants living on Earth have created pictures of the sky. And have given them a prominent place in their folklore as an explanation of how our Universe came to be. What is it all about? How did it begin? What is life? How will it end? This production discusses how scientists believe that the Universe began in an abrupt beginning. That beginning was a fiery explosion that marked the birth of our Universe. (includes assembly & spacecraft processing, cosmic explosion animations, COBE animation, and interviews)

(TRT: 15:00)
ITEM (4): COSMIC OBSERVATION BACKGROUND EXPLORER (COBE) - LAUNCH - The COBE Spacecraft launched on November 18, 1989 on a Delta rocket from Vandeberg AFB, CA.

(TRT: 6:54)
ITEM (5): COBE - 3/12/89 "VIDEO NEWS RELEASE":

a) COBE Spacecraft Assembly

b) Cosmic Explosion Animations & Cosmic Radiation

(TRT: 1:10)
