| "PEEK-A-BOO" STORMS: FIRST RESULTS FROM TRMM | G98-026 | 5/19/99 | 00:09:14 | Dramatic first images from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite. The images highlight TRMM's ability to peer into the inner structure of storms and its ability to more precisely measure global precipitation. TRMM is a joint mission between NASA and the Japanese Space Agency, NASDA.

| ITEM (1): CYCLONE SUSAN TRMM FLYOVER - Visible Infrared Image of Tropical Storm Susan. Animation shows the relative position of tropical cyclone Susan.
ITEM (1a): SLICE THROUGH CYCLONE SUSAN - In-depth view of precipitation inside storm clearly shows the eye of the storm as seen by TRMM's precipitation radar. 3-D colorization shows the rainfall rates and the height of the rain column within the clouds. Red colors indicate rain rates in excess of 2 inches per hour.

| ITEM (2): HOUSTON STORM TRMM FLYOVER - Animation shows the relative position of a severe thunderstorm over Texas.
ITEM (2a): SLICE THROUGH HOUSTON STORM - In-depth view of precipitation inside the storm as seen by TRMM's precipitation radar. A line of thunderstorms can be seen in the taller red areas. Red colors indicate rain rates in excess of 2 inches per hour.

| ITEM (3): TROPICAL RAINFALL (1/97 - 5/98) - More than two-thirds of all precipitation occurs in the tropical regions near the equator. Strong rainfall in the central Pacific are the signature of El Nino. The red areas indicate more than one inch per day. The data were collected by the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I) on board the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) series of satellites. |
