Synopsis |
| KEEPING WARM WITH QUASAR QUILTS | G00-068 | 07/19/00 | 00:06:40 | Inspired by various images from space, Rose and Albert Costanzo created two quilts based on images from the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO). The retired Virginia couple alerted NASA of the quilts when CGRO was returned to Earth via a controlled reentry June 4, following the failure of one of its gyroscopes. One of the Costanzo's quilts is currently on exhibit at the Virginia Quilt Museum in Harrisonburg, VA, while the other one will be displayed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

TAPE CONTENTS: |
| ITEM (1): Quilter Sot - Rose Costanzo of Culpeper, VA, discusses the quilt she made with husband Albert. Not only is it unique in that it accurately shows the Crab and Geminga pulsars, but according to the museum's director, it is rare to see quilts made by men. The couple quilts as a hobby and manages a Christmas tree farm.
| ITEM (2): Museum Director Sot - Joan Knight, Executive Director of the Virginia Quilt Museum, standing in front of the Costanzo's second quilt depicting a variable quasar.
| ITEM (3): B-Roll Of Quilters - Al and Rose Costanzo standing in front of the Geminga Pulsar Quilt.
| ITEM (4): B-Roll, Pulsar Quilt - The Crab and Geminga pulsars were captured by the Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on the Compton Observatory. The CGRO image was taken during the early EGRET observations of 1991-1992.
| ITEM (5): B-Roll, Quasar Quilt - The Energetic Gamma Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) on CGRO saw this gamma ray quasar, called 3C 279, sometime between 1991 and 1992.
| ITEM (6): B-Roll Virginia Quilt Museum - The Virginia Quilt Museum will display the Costanzo's quilt through September 18, 2000. It is located in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
| ITEM (7): Scientific Images - Images taken from space.

2) Quasar (Hubble Space Telescope)

| ITEM (8): Compton Gamma Ray Observatory - The Compton Gamma Ray Observatory was the second of NASA's Great Observatories and the gamma-ray equivalent to the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Its mission was to study some of the most violent physical processes in the Universe, characterized by their
extremely explosive bursts of energy. Launched in April 1991, it burned up during a controlled reentry to Earth's atmosphere on June 4, 2000. Credit: NASA
