Synopsis

CLUSTER II: SATELLITE QUARTET TO INVESTIGATE THE EARTH'S MAGNETOSPHERE G00-064 07/14/00 00:03:38The first two of four identical spacecraft carrying a complement of 11 identical instruments will be launched July 15, aboard a Soyuz rocket from the Baikonour Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan. The next two will be launched from the same launch complex in Kazakhstan on Aug. 9. Cluster's quartet of satellites will travel around Earth in a tetrahedral - triangular pyramid - formation, investigating the solar wind as it crashes into our planet's magnetosphere. The unique placement of the satellites will allow scientists to study the near-Earth environment with unprecedented detail.
