Synopsis |
| NAKED-EYE GAMMA-RAY BURST WAS AIMED SQUARELY AT EARTH | G08-HD127 | 9/10/08 | 4:53 | Unparalleled data from satellites and observatories around the globe show that the jet from a powerful stellar explosion on March 19, 2008, was aimed almost directly at Earth. NASA's Swift satellite detected the explosion -- formally known as GRB 080319B -- at 2:19 a.m. EDT that morning and pinpointed the blast's position in the constellation Boštes. The event, called a gamma-ray burst, became bright enough for human eyes to see. The observations give astronomers the most detailed portrait of burst ever made.

TAPE CONTENTS: |
| ITEM (1): Two-Cone Jet System Animation - This animation shows how astronomers think GRB 080319B erupted. A narrow, ultrafast jet punches through the star at nearly lightspeed, followed by a wider, less energetic jet.

| ITEM (2): Swift Dissolve of GRB 080319B - This sequence dissolves from Swift's UVOT image to its XRT view of the "naked-eye" GRB. The burst was so intense it initially saturated both instruments.

| ITEM (3): Swift Images GRB 080319B Swift imaged GRB 080319B with its UltraViolet and Optical Telescope (UVOT, left) and X-ray Telescope (XRT, right). The event set a record for the brightest-ever gamma-ray burst.
