Synopsis |
| NASA'S CHESAPEAKE BAY HD RESOURCE TAPE (720p/59.94) | G08-HD034 | 5/9/08 | 32:22 | This tape contains a wide-ranging set of NASA video sequences in and around the Chesapeake Bay. The beautiful headlining sequences were created using Landsat satellite data with a resolution of 30 meters per pixel. Studying the Chesapeake Bay is of special significance to NASA because our headquarters and preeminent Earth Science site, the Goddard Space Flight Center, are both located near its shores and well within its sensitive watershed.

TAPE CONTENTS: |
| ITEM (1): NASA Satellites Aid in Chesapeake Bay Recovery - Video Short - By studying the landscape around the Chesapeake Bay, NASA spacecraft are helping land managers figure out how to battle the harmful pollutants that have added to the destruction of the bay's once legendary productivity.

| ITEM (2): Chesapeake Bay Flyover and Watershed Region - The watershed that drains into the Chesapeake Bay is a huge expanse that extends 64,000 miles into five states across North America (New York, Pensylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia) and the District of Columbia. This Landsat visualization zooms in and flies all around the bay area, showing cities, rivers, landmarks, and an overlay of the full Chesapeake watershed. Both of a version of the flyover with labels and a "clean" version is included.

| ITEM (3): Chesapeake Bay Cities Tour - This visualization takes us on a tour around the Chesapeake Bay region, visiting major city centers in the surrounding states: Maryland, Virginia, Delaware and the District of Columbia.

| ITEM (4): Chesapeake Bay Area Urban Growth - Since the first spacecraft launched in 1972, Landsat images have been used to help urban planners understand where growth is taking place and help geographers evaluate how different urban planning programs effect population growth and land use. The first set of sequences shows urban growth in the DC and Baltimore area using data from 1986, 1990, 1996, and 2000. The final sequence uses older census data combined with satellite data in the later years to show 200 years of growth from 1792 to 1992.

| ITEM (5): More NASA Views of the Chesapeake - In addition to Landsat, NASA sees the Chesapeake Bay from several other space-based perspectives. The satellites Terra, Aqua, and SeaStar all have useful imagers for observing the bay. Astronauts looking down from the Space Shuttle and International Space Station have also captured footage of the Chesapeake.
