Synopsis |
| SOLAR CYCLE 24 BEGINS WITH FIRST SUNSPOT | G08-033 | 1/11/08 | 4:49 | The year 2007 was a quiet part of the sun's 11-year activity cycle with very few flares and sunspots. Only a few days into the new year however solar physicists at NASA caught sight of a sunspot that has been declared the first activity of Solar Cycle 24. The onset of a new solar cycle is significant because of the threats it poses to our increasingly space-based technological society.

| ITEM (1): First Sunspot of the New Solar Cycle - On January 4, 2008, NASA researchers saw what is being called the first sunspot of Solar Cycle 24. It was captured by the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).

| ITEM (2): Hinode Sunspot Image - Hinode's Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) provides crystal-clear images of features on the sun's surface. This video shows a whirl of a new developing sunspot. The solar flare shown in this movie was captured on Dec. 13, 2006.

| ITEM (3): Solar Min - Solar Max Comparison - The sun's seasonal cycle is usually about 11 years long. During solar max the number of CMEs range from zero to more than 10 a day. SOHO observations showed this dramatic change from solar minimum in 1996 (left) to maximum in 2000 (right).

| ITEM (4): Sun B-Roll - The NASA Heliophysics Division seeks to explore the Sun-Earth system to understand the Sun and its effects on Earth, the solar system, and the space environmental conditions that will be experienced by explorers, and to demonstrate technologies that can improve future operational systems.
