Synopsis

NASA SATELLITES WATCH AS CHINA CONSTRUCTS GIANT DAM G07-036 6/12/0706:39Some call it the eighth wonder of the world. Others say it's the next Great Wall of China. Upon completion in 2009, the Three Gorges Dam along China's Yangtze River will be the world's largest hydroelectric power generator and one of the few man-made structures so enormous that it's actually visible to the naked eye from space. NASA's Landsat satellites have provided detailed, vivid views of the dam and surrounding area since before construction began in 1994.

TAPE CONTENTS:

ITEM (1): Rise of the Three Gorges Dam - Using Landsat satellite data from 1987, 2000, 2004 and 2006, the Scientific Visualization Studio at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. put together the following sequences showing the construction of the Three Gorges Dam and the filling of its reservoir. The visualization first zooms down to the area of the dam in 2006. After quickly fading back in time to 1987 imagery, we see the progress of the dam in 2000, and then 2004, before finally we are back to the 2006 data. Next, as the camera swings around and starts to move upstream, the view moves to a split screen comparing the dramatic difference on the Yangtze River between 1987 and 2006.

ITEM (2): Unedited Three Gorges Dam Visualizations - The following are the unedited, unlabeled versions of the visualizations used to create the previous "Rise of the Three Gorges Dam" sequence.

  • a) Fly Down to the Dam Area
  • b) Time Series of Dam Construction (1987, 2000, 2004, 2006)
  • c) Flyover of Yangtze, 1987
  • d) Flyover of Yangtze, 2006

  • ITEM (3): Overhead Views of Three Gorges Dam Area - A slow wipe across the Landsat images shows the remarkable change in the Yangtze River between 1987 and 2006. In addition, still images from each of the years (1987, 2000, 2004 and 2006) are included here and available in higher resolution online.

ITEM (4): The Landsat 7 Satellite - Landsat satellites have orbited the Earth since 1972, collecting valuable information on Earth's surface to support global change research and applications in agriculture, business, science and government. NASA's Landsat 7 satellite collects moderate-resolution optical images all over the globe. The following is an animation of the Landsat 7 satellite. The next in the series of Landsat satellites -- the Landsat Data Continuity Mission -- is planned to launch in 2011.
